Everyone's favorite United player, Agustin Martinez, affectionately known as Augie, is presently obtaining a new knee.

In the early eighties, United hosted a team from Mexico, the Monterrey Cosmos, who had Augie on their roster. They were an excellent team, and though outplayed, United prevailed and won the game 2-1.

But the most signicant event happened after the game. While enjoying a few beverages, Augie, who spoke excellent English, established a relationship with a young woman from Madison.

Within a few weeks he was back in the city, and was quickly signed on by Madison United. He was an outstanding player for many years.

I remember a game in Milwaukee when Augie was out with an injury. "Where is your star?" asked our opponents.

Another time we played the Milwaukee Bavarians on their field in a National Cup game. With the score tied, we were awarded a penalty kick just outside their penalty area.

At that time United had a visiting English professional, Jim Hicks, from Fulham. Augie was a free kick specialist, so Jim said "Left foot, over the wall, right corner." Augie did just that, actually hitting the inside of the right goalpost on its way in. United won the game 2-1.

We are hoping that with a new knee  Augie will once again grace the soccer fields of Madison, and that young players can see a legend in action.

Augie has recently been nominated for the Madison Area Soccer Hall of Fame. Please support his candidacy!
